Wine of the Year

On Friday 14 th March, Decanter Magazine held a 2005 Bordeaux Classed Growth blind tasting. All the major Chateaux were included in the tasting. Decanter Magazine tastings are scrupulously honest with all wines tasted strictly blind in random order. We can reveal that only three wines scored 18/20 or more from all five judges. They were - Mouton Rothschild, Pichon- Longueville-Baron and Chateau Pedesclaux.

Yes, it’s true – this often overlooked little Pauillac fifth growth outscored most of the super-star names! There were gasps in the room when the results were revealed and a second bottle tasted was of the same sensational quality. A fantastic achievement by Pedesclaux, clearly the bargain of the vintage.

We have managed to secure a small quantity. If you really want to treat your guests this is the wine for the occassion.

AA Rosette AA Rosette for quality of food and Dining Award

An AA Rosette is a prestigious award for food quality. We were awarded ours in January 2007 and it is merited on the basis of food excellence alone - the proof of the pudding really is in the eating! Just look at what is on offer to tempt the taste buds!

It is recognition of the hard work put in by the staff but also recognition of the quality of the local raw ingredients we obtain from our excellent suppliers.

Additionally the AA has also given us a Dining Award. This award takes into account the ambience, the service and the meal itself.

These awards are important to the business as they tell potential customers what standards to expect when they visit us. They are equally important to the team here as a measure of our performance and achievement.

Thatched Cottage

The staff work happily as a team, complementing each other in attitude and ability….Just to ensure your time in the Thatched Cottage is as enjoyable an experience as we can make it.

The building is listed Grade II. The thatched portion of the building is at least 330 years old with the second half added some 35 years ago. On the end of the grounds sits Turnpike Cottage, another listed building, which extracted fees for using the road to and from Frome in the 18th century and is now used as staff quarters.

We have a ghost although I have never seen her. The Grey Lady is reputed to be the wife of one of the Head brewers of Charlton Brewery, which was at the back of the building. At one time the cottage really was occupied by a Head Brewer, so who knows? A number of guests claim to have seen her, including a bride spending her wedding night here. Perhaps we have her to thank for the calm, friendly, familiar atmosphere in the building.

The present building is right on the Roman Fosse Way and it is probable an earlier construction existed; there have been many finds of Roman remains all round us. There are stories of another ghost from those times but seen much less frequently.
